Unlocking Ikigai: Discovering the Intersection of Passion, Mission, Vocation, and Profession

Ikigai is a Japanese concept that translates to “a reason for being.” It’s the sweet spot where your passions, talents, societal needs, and viable career options converge, offering a blueprint for a fulfilling life.

My journey with ikigai began during a cross-country drive from Los Angeles to Charleston. As I embarked on a new chapter, I turned off the audiobook “Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life” to ponder my life’s direction, aspirations, and potential companions on this journey.

Purpose and Direction Ikigai is about aligning your passions, skills, and societal contributions to

carve out a purposeful existence. Reflecting on my coaching career, I considered whether it fulfilled my life’s desires and if it could leave a lasting impact on the world.

Increased Happiness Engaging in activities that resonate with your soul can elevate your joy. In my 13 years of coaching, I’ve sought moments that sparked joy in myself and others, questioning whether coaching brought genuine happiness, even during personal struggles.

Mental and Physical Health Chasing your ikigai can bolster your well-being. I’ve evaluated whether my coaching ambitions contributed to stress or if they invigorated me, keeping me in peak condition.

Community Impact Ikigai inspires meaningful contributions to society. I’ve assessed my influence on others through coaching, striving for a balance between personal fulfillment and the greater good.

Longevity Living your ikigai may lead to a longer, healthier life. I’ve contemplated the longevity of my coaching career and its potential to shield me from life’s adversities as I age.
